The U. S. Department of Agriculture announced plans to rescind the 2001 Roadless Rule on August 18. The rule currently prohibits road construction and timber harvesting on many federal forest lands.
Recreation groups in Skamania County oppose the rescission. The rule protects forest lands that many residents use for hiking, fishing, and other outdoor activities. The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, which includes Skamania County lands, relies on these protections.
The Department of Agriculture has not set a timeline for the rescission. Local recreation groups plan to submit comments during the public comment period.
