State fire resources have been mobilized to support firefighters battling the Wagon Wheel Fire in Benton County near Benton City. The fire started June 23 at 11:54 a.m. and is estimated at 500 acres. It is burning in brush, grass, and trees and threatening homes and power infrastructure. Level 2 and Level 3 evacuations are in effect.
Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste authorized the mobilization on June 23 at 3:00 p.m. at the request of Fire Chief Dennis Bates of Benton County Fire District 2. The State Emergency Operations Center at Camp Murray is activated to Level 2. Mobilization specialists ordered one wildland strike team to aid in containment efforts.
The fire cause is under investigation. The Wagon Wheel Fire is not in Skamania County but is near Benton County. Skamania County residents should monitor local emergency alerts for any potential impacts to the Columbia River Gorge area.
