State fire assistance has been mobilized under the Washington State Fire Services Resource Mobilization Plan for two separate wildfires in Washington state. The Wagon Wheel Fire in Benton County near Benton City started June 23 at 11:54 a.m. and is burning 500 acres. The Garred Road Fire in Grant County near Coulee City began June 21 at 4:01 p.m. and is burning 1,500 acres. Both fires are threatening homes and infrastructure.
Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste authorized the mobilization on June 23 at 3:00 p.m. for the Wagon Wheel Fire and June 22 at 12:45 p.m. for the Garred Road Fire. The Wagon Wheel Fire has Level 2 and Level 3 evacuations in effect while the Garred Road Fire has Level 3 evacuations. State Emergency Operations Center at Camp Murray is activated to Level 2 for both fires.
The Fire Protection Bureau has ordered resources including wildland strike teams and air support. The Wagon Wheel Fire is burning in brush, grass, and trees. The Garred Road Fire is burning in sage and brush and threatens Sun Lakes State Park Campground and wheat fields. Fire causes are under investigation for both fires.
